Libsyn Automatic Ads are designed to help podcasters monetize their content with minimal setup while still maintaining flexibility and control over the listener experience.
Because every podcast is different, there is no single ad strategy that works for every show. Episode length, audience behavior, and ad placement all play a role in overall earnings. However, strategically configuring your ad slots can significantly increase the number of available monetization opportunities across your catalog.
In many cases, podcasters can substantially increase their revenue potential simply by making full use of available ad placements.
Recommended Ad Placement Formula
One of the most common questions podcasters ask is:
“How many ads should I place in my episodes?”
When Automatic Ads are enabled, Libsyn will automatically configure your show with default ad placements:
- 2 pre-roll slots
- 3 post-roll slots
While this provides a starting point, we recommend adjusting your ad strategy based on episode length to maximize available inventory and revenue potential.
Recommended Automatic Ad Configuration
| Length of Episode | Pre-Rolls | Mid-Rolls | Post-Rolls |
| Less than 30 minutes | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 30 - 60 minutes | 2 | 4 | 3 |
| 60 - 90 minutes | 2 | 6 | 3 |
| Greater than 90 minutes | 2 | 8 | 3 |
Breaks
Consider breaks in between topics in your recordings or in long pauses so that you can take an ad break. For ad breaks, we recommend 2 ads per break. If you take 4 ad breaks in a one-and-a-half-hour recording, you can fit all of the mid-rolls you would like in the recording without worrying about overwhelming your audience.

Note Each Automatic Ad slot is 30 seconds in length and can be skipped by the listener. Skipped ads are still counted as impressions and remain eligible for payout. |
Why Mid-Roll Ads Matter
While pre-roll and post-roll ads are important monetization tools, mid-roll placements are typically the most valuable ad inventory available in podcast advertising.
Mid-roll ads perform well because they are inserted naturally throughout the listening experience rather than clustering all ads at the beginning or end of an episode.
Benefits of mid-roll placement include:
- More monetization opportunities throughout the episode
- Better listener retention compared to excessive pre-rolls
- Higher advertiser demand
- Increased earning potential per episode
In addition, pre-roll and mid-roll placements are considered premium inventory and generally receive higher advertiser demand than post-roll.
Because of this, payouts for pre-roll and mid-roll placements are typically higher than post-roll placements.
That said, we recommend avoiding excessive pre-roll usage, as too many ads at the start of an episode may negatively impact the listener experience.
Understanding the Revenue Impact
Using the recommended ad placement strategy can dramatically increase the number of monetization opportunities available within each episode.
For example, a 60-minute episode with only 2 pre-rolls and 2 post-rolls is using only a portion of its available ad inventory.
Adding the recommended 4 mid-roll slots significantly increases the number of opportunities for ads to be served throughout the episode.
Similarly, a 90-minute episode that only uses pre-roll and post-roll placements may be missing the majority of its monetization potential.
Long-form content naturally creates more opportunities for mid-roll insertion, which is why longer episodes benefit most from a properly configured Automatic Ads strategy.
Best Practices for Automatic Ads
To maximize revenue potential while maintaining a positive listener experience, we recommend:
- Spacing mid-roll ads naturally throughout the episode
- Avoiding excessive clustering of ads at the beginning
- Matching ad density to episode length
- Reviewing episode structure when placing manual cue points
- Monitoring listener feedback and retention trends
